Do You Have the Tools to Do Home Improvement?
July 01 , 2016
Know the tool you use. I'm sure we have all used the wrong tool for the job. I remember in the beginning I didn't have the right equipment, I forgot that tool, or was just lazy. It takes time and money to acquire tools, not to mention the knowledge of, how to use the tool. There are tools that do not need a whole lot of knowledge. For instance, a hammer. Have you ever used something else as a hammer. This is some of the funnier things that go on in repair work. With this article I would like to discuss having basic tools. Lets start with basic carpentry tooling:
With some simple guidelines and a few assorted tools, you would be very surprised at what can be accomplished. In the beginning start with inexpensive tools. Keep in mind, cheap tools are exactly that... cheap. The worst thing in working with cheap equipment is having one break right in the middle of the job.
Let's put together a few items on a tool list to have on hand:
contractors tape measure - 25'
basic clawed hammer
a screwdriver set (not huge)
a combination square
small level (24" or smaller)
pry-bar
a pair of large and small pliers (we would suggest an adjustable set)
equipment box or tool bag(s) (to keep it all in)
now, those are your basic hand tools. Before we get into power tools, we must ask ourselves;
do we have safety equipment to handle these power tools: goggles, gloves, footwear, etc.
are we comfortable using power tools (always read tool instructions / manuals)
become familiar with the tool at hand, whether its a hand tool or power tool.
we cannot stress this enough, tools are not toys!
here is a list of basic power tools:
drill motor - for drilling holes and screwing in screws (we suggest a cordless type, ac power tools need more consideration due to they are more powerful and you always need an extension cord) there is a wide variety of styles and options that you can choose from when purchasing a 'screw gun'.
bow saw - all saws come in a variety of styles (you will notice this when shopping) now cordless saws can be quite pricey, and a plug in circular saw is very powerful so, I suggest if you are not cutting a lot of material, you may not need a power saw - will a hand saw do?
this list is real basic. There a lot of power tools out there these days, ranging from hand power tools to table top tools (ie; drill press, table saw, joiners, etc.) knowing the job and the tools for the job, can make all the difference in the outcome. As you start to accumulate tools, you will notice possible crossover tools (tools that can be used for multiple tasks). You will notice that your tool collection may be getting out of hand but, here is what I do, use separate toolboxes or drawers to store and separate the tools.
I'm in the process of getting some e-books written, for the website I am building. For all of to use from time to time when the repairs of our home are necessary.
